How to write a theoretical and Scientific Foundations of Nursing Research essay (Solved)
Suicide occurs more often in older adults but it is among the leading causes of death among children and adolescents today. The increased use of social media among this population and the risk for mental health conditions makes the youths at risk of suicide (Miron et al., 2019). Suicide involves fatal self-injurious acts among people with some evidence of intent to die. This act is associated with the loss of many young lives and it puts a lot of pressure on families that are left behind. Investigating the causes of suicide among youths can aid in the development of effective preventive strategies.
Children and adolescents growing up today face an unprecedented threat to their health, especially issues related to mental health. Suicide is identified as the second leading cause of death for youths aged 15 to 24 years. Worldwide, suicide accounts for 1.4% of all deaths and it is the 15th leading cause of death (Shankar et al., 2020). Among the youths, it is observed that the risk for suicide increases with age with male individuals being at a higher risk. Most youths continue to experience suicidal ideation even after discharge and this accounts for the increased suicidal attempts observed. Demographically, more girls experience suicidal ideation but more boys die by suicide (Miron et al., 2019). Additionally, death from suicide is more observed in indigenous youths because of factors like poverty and substance abuse.
Adolescence is a time when many youths indulge in behaviors that can affect their mental health and lead to an increased risk of suicide. Studies demonstrate that most people who commit suicide have suffered from at least one mental health disorder (Miron et al., 2019). In youths, substance abuse is commonly associated with an altered mental status that increases the risk of suicide. Evidence suggests that mental health issues brought about by substance use contribute to 47 to 74% of suicide risk (Bilsen, 2018). Another critical issue among the youths is a history of previous suicide attempts. Boys with previous suicide attempts are observed to commit suicide in the later years compared to girls. Investigating the existence of such factors among the youths is important to determine prevention strategies and management plans.
Youth suicide constitutes a major health problem for individuals, families, and communities. The issue of suicide among adolescents merits investigation because it has increased recently and the significant effects observed. For instance, the close relationship between the risk of suicide and mental health disorders should be investigated. Secondly, suicide causes significant effects on the lives of surviving communities (Shankar et al., 2020). For example, those left behind may experience shock, anger, guilt, and mental health problems like depression. Studies demonstrate that those exposed to suicide experience prolonged grief and posttraumatic stress which can complicate their lives.
The findings from this research are likely to provide information about the relationship between youth suicide and common risk factors like mental health disorders and substance abuse. Secondly, investigating this problem can help to identify modern ways to deal with at-risk youths and how technology can be used to address this problem. Healthcare provides can use this data to plan for preventive measures among the youths and formulate plans of care for those already exposed. Understanding the effects of suicide to families and communities can help providers to organize support systems and utilize available resources to improve their mental and physical well-being.
