Quantitative research designs include: descriptive, correlational, quasi-experimental, and experimental. Descriptive designs are used to describe characteristics of a population or phenomenon, often to discover patterns. Correlational designs are used to examine relationships between two or more variables. Quasi-experimental designs are used to examine causal relationships. They are similar to experimental designs but without the random assignment of participants to groups (Baldi et al., 2014) Experimental designs are used to test hypotheses and examine causal relationships between variables.

When determining which quantitative design to use for a study, researchers need to consider the type of data they will be collecting, the research questions they are asking, and the resources available. For example, if the research question is asking whether a certain educational program affects student test scores, then an experimental design would be appropriate, as it allows the researcher to manipulate the independent variable and measure the effectiveness of the program on the dependent variable (Gray & Grove, 2021). On the other hand, if the research question asks about the relationship between income level and health outcomes, a correlational design would be appropriate, as it allows the researcher to measure the relationship between two variables without manipulating any of them.

Examples of research questions that use quantitative research designs include:

Descriptive: What are the most common symptoms of depression among adolescents?

Correlational: What is the relationship between the amount of time spent on social media and self-esteem among college students? ( Cohn et al., 2009)

Quasi-Experimental: Does a financial literacy program for low-income individuals lead to improved credit scores?

Experimental: Does a mindfulness-based intervention improve psychological well-being among college students?

For my social/research problem, I have chosen to use a descriptive research design. My research question is, “What are the most common reasons individuals with low-income levels cannot access quality healthcare services?” To conduct this study, I will need to collect data from individuals with low-income levels through surveys, interviews, and questionnaires. This data will then be analyzed to identify patterns and common themes among the responses. The study results can then inform policy and interventions designed to improve access to healthcare services for individuals with low-income levels.

A descriptive research design is ideal for me when investigating the social/research problem, for instance, suicide in children and young adults. This research design is well-suited for studies whose purpose is to observe and describe a phenomenon objectively and systematically (Creswell, 2020). The descriptive research design aligns best with the purpose of my study, which is to explore the prevalence of suicide among children and young adults and the factors that contribute to it. My concept map and literature review matrix indicates that the study should focus on analyzing the relationship between suicide attempts and depression, as well as the role of social media in suicide prevention. My theoretical, conceptual framework also suggests that the study investigates the environmental, psychological, and biological factors contributing to suicide.

This study’s proposed quantitative research question is: “What are the relationship between depression, social media use, and suicide attempts among children and young adults?” This question focuses on the relationship between the variables of interest and explores the potential influence of depression, social media use, and other factors on suicide attempts (Rew et al., 2020).

Descriptive research design is encompassed by a series of steps when conducting a research study. Firstly one should establish the research question and develop a research plan. This should include a clear definition of the problem, the objectives and goals of the study, and the research design and data collection methods to be used. Secondly, selecting the participants. This should include a detailed description of the population of interest and a plan for recruiting and selecting participants (Souza, 2020). Thirdly Collecting and analyzing the data should be done. This should include a detailed description of the data collection methods and data analysis techniques to be used. Interpret the results. This should include a discussion of the findings, comparing them to existing literature, and reporting the findings. This should include a description of the study, the results, and the implications for practice and research.
