- Ma, Z. R., Shi, L. J., & Deng, M. H. (2018). Efficacy of cognitive-behavioral therapy in children and adolescents with insomnia: a systematic review and meta-analysis. Brazilian Journal of Medical and Biological Research, 51.
Several studies indicate a high prevalence of insomnia among children and adolescents. Various pharmacotherapies have been used to treat the disorder; however, their efficacies have not been established in this population. An emerging type of therapy: cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), for insomnia is still controversial. As such, this study was conducted as a meta-analysis and a systemic review to determine the effectiveness of CBT in children and adolescents with insomnia (Ma, Shi & Deng, 2018).
The high prevalence of insomnia among this target population has been linked with factors such as “depression, anxiety, problems due to lack of attention, and dismal school performance.” (Ma et al., 2018). Previous findings from longitudinal studies reveal that early sleep disorders are associated with behavioral and emotional disorders in later life. Therefore, untreated insomnia has detrimental effects on an individual’s cognitive development, emotional wellbeing, attention, and academic performance. The clinical consequences of this condition on daily life warrant its address with the seriousness it deserves.
Due to limited drugs approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for insomnia therapy, there is a need to embrace non-pharmacological methods. The efficacy of various CBT modalities for treating insomnia in adults has been evaluated in the past, with the results showing positive responses among the target groups. Therefore, the goal of this study was to measure the efficacy of these modalities in this target population.
This study is a systematic review and a meta-analysis. Data from the systemic review was collected by formulating the clinical question and developing inclusion and exclusion criteria for the searches. The searches had to contain the keywords in the clinical search question. A detailed and broad literature review was then conducted on valid and reliable websites and libraries, including Cochrane, PubMed, etc. Relevant studies on CBT for insomnia in children and adolescents were filtered out of the numerous results from the web and analyzed for this study. The primary outcomes measured were sleep onset latency (SOL), wake after sleep onset (WASO), total sleep time (TST), and the percentage of sleep efficiency (SE). The collected data were analyzed using Review Manager software.
The study findings revealed that SOL and SE percentage showed that CBT significantly reduced the approximate period to begin sleeping following lights-out. It also enhanced sleep efficiency better than control intervention. WASO and TST did not show significant improvements. Conclusively, CBT is effective in reducing symptoms of insomnia throughout the follow-up period. These findings were consistent with similar studies on adult populations which indicated significant improvements in WASO, SOL, and SE%. This study provides evidence of the effectiveness of CBT for insomnia in children and adolescents, and anxiety symptoms thus can be integrated into therapy.
The study has used current research articles which provide up-to-date information. Additionally, the meta-analyses were diverse, thus enriching the content. The references used are mostly within the past ten years, with others going beyond that. I’d suggest using more current articles in the study and conduction of random controlled trials on this topic to confirm the findings.

Sleep deprivation can lead to difficulties in recall, attention, and problem-solving abilities, affecting academic performance. This research was conducted with the purpose of estimating the prevalence and academic effect of different sleep disorders on university students by gender. The researchers urged the most common complaint among university students is sleep disturbance. Additionally, they suggested demanding schedules, emerging social prospects, and changes in the sleeping setting can also contribute to sleep disturbance (AL Salmani et al.,.2020). The researchers paid attention to the risks of inadequate sleep to adolescents and young adults and its effects on health and academic performance.
The researchers evaluated the prevalence of sleep disorders among university students, and the findings were that “insomnia, affective disorders, narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnoea, and restless leg syndrome were frequently reported” (AL Salmani et al.,2020).
They noted changing rates of prevalence in sleep disorders according to gender, age, and socio-economic status. They highlighted the relationship between academic performance and sleep.
The researchers used the cross-sectional study design. The inclusion criteria were local students between the age of 17-25 years, and they excluded international students and those students who were previously diagnosed with sleep disorders or chronic ailments. The researcher collected data using a two-part self-administered survey tool. The first part consisted of demographic characteristics, and the second part constituted the previously validated SLEEP-50 Questionnaire (AL Salmani et al.,2020). The items in the second part were structured to cover criteria for diagnosing sleep disorders. They proceed to the study after giving verbal consent.
The scholars used Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) to analyze all data. The majority of participants were more than 20 years old, female were 57% of the total participants, and the total participants were 637. They find narcolepsy (88.2%) as the most frequent and sleepwalking (4.2%) less frequent sleeping disorder. The researchers suggested that bad cultural norms may be the leading cause of narcolepsy among college students. They also find higher prevalence rates among older (20 years and above) students than younger adults.
The aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of sleep disturbance on academics exellence as per GPA. They find Males were not suffering from sleep disturbance risk, but females were affected by obstructive sleep apnoea, sleepwalking, and affective disorders. The scholars didn’t mention university policies and regulations which may have a role in sleeping disturbance.
