Evaluation of the Nursing Objectives

Through learning in the course, I have met various course objectives. Firstly I understand various foundational theories and conceptual frameworks of the nursing profession from gender and multicultural practice. The application of these theories has educated me on the provision of patient-centred care. Patient-centred care improves patient satisfaction with care and increases uptake by individuals from racial minority groups.  Upon completion of the topic, I have improved my competency in providing culturally sensitive care to patients.

Secondly, I have learned how various nursing theories define the concept of environment, personal health, and nursing. This has increased my knowledge of how to apply the theoretical perspectives in a specific scenario.  The person is the individual with the healthcare needs that need to be met. Health is the state of being free from physical, emotional, mental, and psychological illness or injuries. The nurse is seen as the individual responsible for fulfilling the diverse healthcare needs of the patient. Finally, the environment encompasses the internal and external conditions that may affect the state of wellness and wellbeing. I can also evaluate the different theoretical models, including their weaknesses and strengths in modern nursing practice.  Finally, I can evaluate the major nursing concepts, theories and models in nursing practice. This will help the nurses plan for the care of the patients with diverse healthcare needs with appropriate models and a scientific-based theoretical framework.

The course has also enabled me to restructure my nursing philosophy based on knowledge beliefs, values, standards and ethical principles. Ethical principles have boosted my decision making and my ability to deal with ethical and legal issues that commonly arise in the healthcare setting.  Some of these principles I am well conversant with include justice, truth-telling, beneficence, nonmaleficence, autonomy, confidentiality and informed consent (McDermott-Levy et al., 2018). I have vastly improved my knowledge base.  Finally, through the course, I have increased my ability to reason while providing healthcare services to patients. Reasoning in nursing is a fundamental skill every nurse requires.

The course material has my professional practice in numerous ways. Firstly it has increased my ability to utilize specific theoretical frameworks in nursing. I can apply the theories in the respective scenarios (Song & Kim, 2020). Most of the time, utilization of the theories in my professional practise has improved patient outcomes. Previously I did not use a theoretical model to provide healthcare needs of the patients. I am now competent to use the theoretical framework after learning and understanding its applicability in modern nursing practice.  Secondly, through the course, I can provide culturally sensitive and appropriate care to patients from diverse settings. Previously I regarded myself as not competent enough to provide care to patients from the diverse cultural background. The key to cultural competency and sensitivity is the involvement of the patient in planning for their care. The ethical principles have also enabled me to provide appropriate care to the patient without any major ethical and legal implications.

Learning of the nursing theories has influenced my nursing profession. Firstly the theories define the scope of nursing practice in the healthcare settings (Smith, 2019). This enlightens me on my specific role in the care of patients with diverse healthcare needs.  Secondly, the nursing theories have provided me with the necessary knowledge to take care of patients from diverse backgrounds. The theories also guide my nursing actions. Most of the theories provide a step by step guidelines in the care of the patients.
