How informatics is involved in the Gynecology and oncology unit

In the gynecology and oncology unit, I deal with women with certain reproductive disorders or complications. Issues we deal with in the gynecology department include hormone disorders, fertility issues, menstruation issues, and obstetrics. I also deal with individuals on various cancer management. The most common types of cancers we deal with are lung cancer, breast cancer, ovarian cancer, uterine cancer, and different types of lymphomas. The common nursing interventions I do include patient assessment and history taking, medication administration, nursing care implementation and providing health education to the patients. Generally, the aim of the department is to enhance the health and wellbeing of individuals by improving the safety of care and the quality of healthcare outcomes.

In the unit, we have applied various health information technology or health information systems daily. This health information technologies allow for delivery of quality healthcare while adhering to the safety and security guidelines.  Firstly the hospital utilizes the health portals to provide healthcare services. It is a secure platform that allows patient from the department to access their personal health information from any location with internet access (dendere et al., 2019).  I use the patient portals when performing certain medical tasks focused on improving the health outcomes of the patient.  When a patient is admitted to the gynecological or oncology department and cannot talk and needs urgent care, I normally log into their patient portal to confirm for potential allergic reactions to drugs before beginning the treatment. Using the records, I can access the patient’s medical history. Hence I will be able to connect their presenting symptoms to their health history.  I also use the system to schedule an appointment for patients on home care and even monitor adherence to certain medications.

Secondly, I commonly use the clinical decision support system. It is a computer-based program that analyzes the data within the electronic health records and provides prompts and reminders to implement evidence-based clinical guidelines.  I commonly use this system because it reminds me of the scheduled patient’s tests, especially in dealing with oncology women.  The system flags dangerous variations in the biological patient profile, enabling me to decide on correcting them. For example, the system can indicate low levels of immune cells or hemoglobin then recommending corrective measures.

Thirdly I also utilize electronic prescribing. My department has a policy that requires electronic prescribing and dispensation.  When a prescription has been written for a certain chemotherapeutic agent, I will insert the order in the electronic prescribing system, which will then be automatically be sent to the pharmacy department. The department will then verify the order while counterchecking with the records from the electronic medical records before finally dispensing the drugs. This prevents errors as the system is designed to notify me in case of any allergies to certain drug components or substances. Additionally, it saves time and allows the efficiency of medical services.

Finally, I continuously utilize telehealth in the delivery of healthcare services to patients. Telehealth allows me to provide certain nursing intervention to the patients in their home setting. The systems allows me to be connected to the patient using a network based system. Services I provide using telehealth include providing health education, addressing patients concerns regarding care, monitoring the patient’s condition and providing them with referral options if necessary.
