How to write a nursing essay on Neuman Systems Model
Neuman’s systems model provides a system-based or holistic approach to nursing with an element of flexibility. It focuses on patients’ responses to actual or potential environmental stressors and the use of tertiary, secondary, and primary nursing prevention interventions to maintain health and well-being. Neuman views nursing as a profession concerned with various variables influencing the patient’s responses to environmental stressors. Nurses need to help individuals, their families, and other groups to maintain the possible state of health wellness. Nurse’s perception needs to be assessed as it influences the ability of nurses to set feasible care plans.
According to the model, the nursing process has six phases. The first phase involves assessing the patient whereby the actual and the potential stressors are established(Ahmadi & Sadhegi, 2017 ). In the second phase, the nurse utilizes the collected data to make a nursing diagnosis. The data collected includes health-seeking behaviors, ineffective thermoregulation, ineffective coping, and activity intolerance. The third step involves the setting of goals. A plan is implemented using the three levels of prevention from the goals with an ultimate focus on strengthening the patient’s resistance and line of defenses. Finally, the nurses evaluate the interventions to investigate whether the stable state is maintained or not.
Application of Neuman’s system.
Neuman systems model can be applied in a mental healthcare institution. The system is favorable in the management of patients with diverse psychological, sociological and mental needs. Specifically, the system can be applied to all elderly patients with stroke in long-term care facilities. Nurses have a responsibility to care for patients to ensure their health improves and complications are minimized. Application of the Neuman model in these patients utilizes the six stages of the nursing process.
In nursing diagnosis, the nurse diagnoses the patient by collecting comprehensive information from the patient. The nurse can determine the potential stressors that could affect the patients with stroke. In the physiological environment, the stressors may include the inability to eat, numbness in the arm, and difficulty sleeping. In the psychological environment, the patient may have lost attachment with the family members. Other needs include the inability to engage in activities, pain, urinary incontinence, etc. The nursing diagnoses for these patients include pain, activity intolerance, anxiety, social isolation, ineffective coping, and activity intolerance.
In goal setting, the nurse works together with the patient to set realistic and achievable goals. The mutual agreement is key in increasing compliance with the interventions (Sultan, 2018). In patients with stroke, various goals can be set, including the ability to perform physical activity, ability to sleep comfortably, lack of or reduced pain, ability to form and maintain relationships, and alleviate anxiety.
In nursing outcome, the nurse evaluates the intervention and the goals set in the goal-setting phase. The patients need to show a positive response to the interventions. For example, the physiological, psychological, social, and mental symptoms should be relieved in the patient. An example of an outcome is that the stroke patients may feel more satisfied and comfortable after performing a religious activity. The patient may also be able to engage in activities of daily living after the administration of prescribed pain medications.
Conclusion
The above case shows the utilization of the theoretical framework in stroke patients. The scenarios demonstrate that Neuman Model System may be useful in caring for patients with long-term diseases such as stroke. The model enables nurses to understand why patients act the way they do. The nurse has to assess the patient, set goals, and finally implement interventions to help the patient cope. Overall, the model guides the delivery of healthcare services in diverse healthcare settings.
