Q1. Sord. At what vertebral level does the conus medullaris end, for this individual? Q2. Find spinal nerve C1 (roots and/or rami). Does it emerge above vertebra C1, or below it? Q3. Find the dorsal and ventral roots of spinal nerve C1. If your view made it hard to tell which way was dorsal and which was ventral, how could you tell the dorsal root apart from the ventral root? Q4. Notice that, as you move away from the spinal cord, the dorsal and ventral roots join together and then give rise to dorsal and ventral rami. Which ramus (dorsal or ventral) is thicker? Q5. Go down to spinal nerve Cs. Which two vertebrae is it between? As you may know, the phrenic nerve is an important nerve that emanates from the cervical plexus. To find it first locate spinal nerve Ca, then look for a branch off of it that goes down, down, down. Q6. What other even larger nerve does the phrenic nerve run right next to in descending past vertebrae C7 to T2? (Hint: it is a cranial nerve that is a key part of the parasympathetic nervous system.) Q7. List the names of the three trunks and the ventral rami that contribute to each trunk. Find the four major nerves that arise from the three trunks. Notice how each takes its own path distally down the arm and forearm. Q8. If you had to explain to a classmate how to distinguish the musculocutaneous nerve from the radial nerve, based on what they look like and where they go, what would you say? Q9. If you had to explain to a classmate how to distinguish the median nerve from the ulnar nerve, based on what they look like and where they go, what would you say? Now head to the thoracic spinal nerves next to the spinal cord. Q10. How much branching and merging do the thoracic ventral rami do with each other, as compared with the cervical ventral rami? Now head down to the femoral nerve. Q11. A large nerve that could be confused with the femoral nerve is the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve. Find that one as well. Explain (as if to a classmate) how you can most easily distinguish between the femoral nerve and the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve. Q12. What major nerve branches medially off of the femoral nerve at the approximate height of the neck of the femur? Q13. Look for the sacral and coccygeal spinal nerves (Si to Ss and Cou). Are any missing from this model? Q14. Find the sciatic nerve. Briefly describe how this differs from the femoral nerve in terms of (A) contributing spinal nerves, (B) anatomical location (anterior vs. posterior). and (C) size. Q15. Just superior to the popliteal region, the sciatic nerve splits into two. Briefly explain how you will remember which branch is which. (Do the names correspond to anatomical regions and/or bones?)
