Some of these newts, especially populations living in Oregon, accumulate a lethal neurotoxin in their skin for defense against predators (Figure 1b). Common garter snakes (Thamnophis sirtalis; Figure 1c) are native to most of North America and feed on earthworms, small fish, and amphibians such as newts. Researchers have discovered that some of these snakes are able to resist the lethal neurotoxin and consume rough-skinned newts. 1. Based on this case study, what phenotypic variation is present in the garter snake population? a. 2. What is the genetic origin of that variation? a. 3. In question 4, you will construct an essay that explains how the ability to resist the neurotoxin of rough-skinned newts evolved in a population of common garter snakes that lacked this adaptation. To help you with that essay, first complete the following table describing how each of the principles of natural selection applies to this case.
