Task 4 for Nursing in Community Health:

When there is a natural or man-made disaster, the nurse is often the first person to help. So, it’s important to know what a nurse does, how the chain of command works, how people talk to each other, and what resources are available.

For this task, you should finish the “Disaster in Franklin Country” simulation (found in the web link below). It takes about 45 minutes to an hour to finish the simulation. You should write down the roles of a disaster team, the chain of command, the way people talk, and the resources that are available.

Task:

After you finish the simulation, write an essay (3–4 pages is a good length) in which you:

A. Tell what the main public health workers, like the public health nurse, did during the disaster.

B. Describe the community health nurse’s chain of command during the simulation.

C. Talk about the tools a community health nurse has to deal with situations that are outside of the nurse’s job description.

D. Describe what the community health nurse did when she ran door-to-door interviews and saw something that could be an emergency.

E. Describe what the community health nurse did to help the people she talked to deal with the aftermath of the flooding.
1. Talk about ways that the people being interviewed were calmed down or could have been calmed down.

F. Talk about how other nursing staff could be ready to help in a similar emergency that affects a much larger area (e.g., the effect of Hurricane Katrina).

G. When you use sources, make sure to use APA format for all in-text citations and references.
